Pottery is one of the oldest crafts, and children aged 7 to 12 are the ideal age to learn it. The Little Potter program at the Mian Art Studio takes children from raw clay to a finished, fired piece over four weeks, under the supervision of instructor Taghreed Al-Muhammadi.
What does a child learn in the Little Potter program?
The program is structured in a clear progression. The first week focuses on introducing different types of clay, their appearance before and after firing, and how to prepare them for working. The second week covers three shaping techniques: slitting, pressing, and rope, with the child creating a piece using each technique. The third week explores underglaze, carving, sculpting, and glazing, applying these techniques to the pieces. The fourth week involves firing the pieces and removing them as finished works.
For children in Medina
The program takes place in an actual workshop, surrounded by real tools and materials used by potters. The child experiences all stages of pottery, from soft clay to a diverse range of food-grade or decorative fired ceramic pieces that they take home at the end of the program.
